Top 5 Sustainable Aussie Pet Products

Updated: Aug 4

3,791,000 tonnes of plastics were consumed in Australia in 2020-21. Despite government policies to recover and recycle plastic materials, just 14% of plastic waste is kept out of landfills. Furthermore, approximately 130,000 tonnes of plastic leaks into the marine environment each year.

By 2050, the amount of plastics consumed in Australia is expected to more than double. It’s estimated that plastic in the oceans by this time could outweigh fish. The largest single contributor to plastic waste? Households.

It’s Plastic Free July. This month, take a moment to think about your own plastic consumption at home. To this end, we thought we’d share our top 5 picks for plastic-free, sustainable pet products available from five eco-conscious Aussie pet brands.

1.        Conscious Pet Co

The Conscious Pet Co Coffee Wood Chew is a 100% natural by-product of the coffee bean harvesting process. Unlike animal bones and other dental chews, this wood chew leaves no odour, minimal mess and doesn’t splinter or crack. Great for power chewers and leaves teeth and gums clean. www.consciouspetco.com.au.

2.        Oh Crap

Oh Crap produces 100% compostable dog poo collection bags which disintegrate in landfill within 3 months. The bags are made from biodegradable cornstarch instead of plastic and are three times thicker than average poop bags, so the poo stays inside the bag and not on your hands. www.ohcrap.com.au.

3.        Doggy Eco

The Eco Ball by Doggy Eco has a unique composition of compounded New Zealand sheep's wool. It can absorb water making it heavy enough to be thrown as far as a tennis ball. The solid nature of the ball means it lasts longer than a generic tennis ball as it can withstand bites and tough chewers. The ball is non-abrasive, so it won’t damage teeth or gums and promotes chewing for a strong jaw. www.doggyeco.com.au.

4.        Made For Hounds

Remember the gorgeous wool blankets that were always on the bed at your Nanna's house? Made For Hounds gives them new life with their collection of handmade up-cycled vintage wool coats.  The outer shell of each coat is made from an up-cycled wool blanket while the lining is a structured quilted cotton backing for warmth and durability. www.madeforhounds.com.au.

5.        Bobbie’s Bow Wow

Bobbie’s Bow Wow makes collars, leads and harnesses made from 100% organic and ethically sourced hemp.  Hemp is hypoallergenic and gentle on sensitive skin, strong and durable and it’s also resistant to mould and mildew making it by the far the healthiest choice. www.bobbiesbowwow.com.au.
